As GWI magazine goes to press this month I will be preparing for a webinar looking at some
of the key developments for desalination in the Middle East. As the engine room of global
desal demand, the Middle East dictates a lot of the fundamentals of the market, with the
scale and frequency of contracts in the region dwarfing those in the rest of the world.
As usual when updating our readers on the desalination markets, the first point of call will
be the progress on the upcoming new plants being contracted and awarded around the
region. But beyond that, something that really sticks out this time around is how many
countries in the Middle East are seriously considering the refurbishment and replacement of
existing facilities as a part of their strategy to build out capacity.
How old is too old for desal? As brownfield desal projects become more common, Tom Scotney investigates.
