We are halfway through this extraordinary year, and I think it is time to take a step back and look at the big picture of how things might play out over the next six months. So far, we have seen what the virus does to the superficial indicators of the economy: the growth rate, unemployment, stock market values, and government deficits. We haven’t yet seen the impact on the deep tectonic forces – the international flows of trade and capital – that shape our world, defining who is rich and who is poor, who has money to spend and who has none.
