Women are playing an increasingly important role in driving progress in many critical areas of sustainable development such as water and agriculture. They are emerging as game changers in the efforts to achieve more sustainable and equitable development. However, women in the Arab region have long faced significant challenges in playing an effective role in their societies. These challenges include patriarchal societal norms and structures, limited access to education and economic opportunities, and discrimination in areas such as the legal system and political representation. Here, Hassan Aboelnga and Haifa Al Kaylani discuss the challenges and opportunities facing women in the Arab region, and how the STEP Framework (Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship & Policy) can make an important contribution to empowering women in the Arab region.
